Specialty in Foot and Ankle Surgery

Dr. Litchfield - Board Certified Foot & Ankle Surgeon

Dr. Litchfield has specialized medical and surgical training, and board certification in the care of the lower extremity. He is highly trained in the surgical treatment of foot and ankle fractures, ankle sprains, Achilles tendon disorders, arthritis, bunions (Lapidus bunionectomy), hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, and more.

I had an ankle injury while playing sports when I was in high school. My injury was more severe than I was aware. My doctor really educated me about the significance of foot and ankle injuries and his approach to my treatment inspired me to follow a similar path of medicine. Getting people back to what they were doing before and educating them is so rewarding to me.   – Dr. Litchfield

Helping Patients Get Back on Their Feet

Some of the most common conditions and injuries he treats are ankle fracture/sprain and bunion removal or Lapidus bunionectomy.

Bunion correction is more nuanced than simply removing the “bump” from the great toe…and there are many who suffer from this painful condition.

Dr. Litchfield is highly trained in the Lapidus procedure; a surgical procedure used to treat bunion deformity. It involves fusing the joint between the first metatarsal bone and one of the small bones in your midfoot called the medial cuneiform.  Benefits of this procedure done by Dr. Litchfield can range from, correction of the deformity at the apex, preservation of big toe joint function and stabilizing the midfoot once again. All while being a less expensive procedure with the same result as lapiplasty patients. Patients often return to normal activities and shoe gear by 6 weeks to 3 months.

What Should You Expect From An Evaluation?

Medical History

The first step in the evaluation is a thorough medical history. You’ll first be asked some basic questions about your medical history and lifestyle.

Physical Examination

A complete physical examination includes inspection and assessment of your range of motion.  Your doctor will look for physical abnormalities, swelling, deformity, or muscle weakness, and check for tender areas.

Tests

Specific tests may be ordered to help identify the cause of your pain and any other problems.

  • X-rays
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Electrical studies. Your doctor may order a test, such as an EMG (electromyogram), to evaluate nerve function

Treatment Options

After your evaluation and imaging tests, your doctor will talk with you about your diagnosis and explain what treatments are available. Together, you’ll decide on a personalized treatment plan based on your diagnosis, activity level, goals, and preferences.

Dr. Litchfield will offer non-surgical podiatric options for the appropriate patient when indicated. Non-surgical treatment is always the first goal. Dr. Litchfield will take his time with each patient to understand their concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan through a shared decision-making process.
